Attending the Chiang Mai CAD Year-End Countdown 2026 was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience—an unforgettable night filled with culture, food, lanterns, fireworks, and emotions. If you’re planning to welcome the New Year in Thailand, this iconic Lanna-style countdown event should be at the very top of your list.

Getting to the Chiang Mai CAD Countdown Event

Our journey started in the late afternoon as we headed to Payap University, the designated transportation hub for the Chiang Mai CAD Countdown. We booked a Grab ride around 4:15 PM, and the travel time was surprisingly quick—about 25 minutes.

However, since some roads were already closed for the event, our Grab dropped us off a short walking distance away. From there, everything was extremely organized. Clear color-coded signs guided attendees to their respective shuttle bus areas.

Since we purchased VIP tickets, we followed the yellow signs. After presenting our tickets, staff gave us a yellow hand tag, which indicated our assigned bus. Within just a few minutes, the bus departed. The shuttle ride to CAD Lanna took approximately 45 minutes, allowing us to relax and get excited for the night ahead.

Registration and Seat Assignment at CAD Lanna

Upon arrival at the venue, we were immediately escorted to the VIP registration area, again clearly marked in yellow, matching our ticket category. The process was smooth and efficient.

At registration, we received our official event ID cards, which included our designated seating. For us, it was Green Seat 19 and 20—a great location to enjoy the performances and countdown.

Exploring the Event Grounds: Culture, Food, and Souvenirs

Once inside the event area, we were amazed by how vast and immersive the venue was. There were countless local snack stalls, drink booths, and souvenir shops offering unique Thai crafts and memorabilia. Traditional Northern Thai (Lanna) cultural performances were happening across the venue, adding to the magical atmosphere.

Honestly, 2 to 3 hours is not enough to fully explore everything. Every corner had something interesting to see, taste, or photograph.

VIP Buffet Dinner Experience

At around 6:30 PM, guests were allowed to proceed to their designated buffet dinner areas. We simply followed the yellow arrows leading us to the VIP dining zone.

The buffet was impressive and generous, featuring:

  • Authentic Thai dishes
  • Noodles and rice meals
  • Desserts and sweets
  • Drinks and ice cream
  • Grilled skewers

The best part? You could go back for more anytime. We spent nearly two hours eating, relaxing, and recharging before heading back out to enjoy the rest of the program.

Performances and Tribute Moments

After dinner, staff announced that guests could now proceed to their assigned seats. We made our way to ours and enjoyed more performances, showcasing Northern Thai culture and artistry.

One of the most touching moments of the night was a tribute to Queen Sirikit, who had recently passed away. It was heartfelt, respectful, and deeply moving—one of those moments that truly connects you to Thai culture and history.

Countdown Night: Sky Lanterns and Fireworks

At around 11:30 PM, the host announced that it was time to prepare the sky lanterns. By 11:50 PM, attendees were allowed to light their lanterns but were instructed to hold onto them until the official countdown.

Releasing the lantern at exactly midnight, along with thousands of others, was incredibly emotional. Watching the sky fill with glowing lanterns while fireworks exploded above was simply breathtaking. Experiencing this for the first time is something words can barely describe—it was magical, powerful, and unforgettable.

The fireworks and lantern release lasted about 30 minutes, giving everyone ample time to take in the moment and capture memories.

Heading Back After the Event

By around 12:45 AM, we headed back to the shuttle bus area, which followed the same efficient color-coded system as earlier. We chose to be dropped off at the Chiang Mai Night Market, which was only about 1.5 kilometers from our hotel—a convenient and smart choice.

Final Thoughts: Is Chiang Mai CAD Countdown Worth It?

Absolutely yes. The Chiang Mai CAD Year-End Countdown is more than just a New Year’s celebration—it’s a full cultural experience. From organized transportation and VIP comfort to incredible food, performances, lanterns, and fireworks, everything was thoughtfully planned.

If you’re looking for a unique, emotional, and culturally rich way to welcome the New Year, this event is 100% worth experiencing at least once in your life.
